How do other schools use Mapper to target Tier 3 vocabulary?

Bedrock Mapper is used in thousands of classrooms to teach Tier 3 subject-specific vocabulary. Here's how...

Mapper provides targeted vocabulary instruction, personalised to every learner, across every subject. We believe no other piece of EdTech has the same potential to unlock the entire curriculum for every learner.

Mapper is especially helpful at transitions. The jump in language difficulty between KS2 and KS3 is vast. Schools can use Mapper for newly arriving Year 7 learners to assess (for example) their science vocabulary knowledge and teach the necessary vocabulary items for success in Year 7. Schools can also use the platform to pre-teach key terms and knowledge to ease the transition between KS3 and 4 or KS4 and 5.

In-class uses of Mapper:

  • Pre-teaching vocabulary required with rigid dates set
  • Formative assessment following teaching using rigid dates
  • Within lessons as a ‘Do Now’ activity
  • To explicitly teach the vocabulary of a new topic
  • As a literacy lesson with cross-curricula usage
  • To test word knowledge at the start of a topic and again at the end

At-home uses of Mapper:

  • For revision, setting a whole topic with the same date for learners to work through
  • 3-6 sessions per week across the entire curriculum
  • As a weekly/fortnightly rotation of subject sessions, depending on homework time, monitored by the form tutor and class teacher.
  • Schools with their vocabulary curricula already mapped often start using Mapper with approximately 4-5 subjects; common choices are EBACC subjects.

Cross-curricular uses of Mapper:

  • Content from core subjects (Maths, English and Science)
  • EAL learners using KS1/KS2 content
  • Selected learners with a particularly low reading ability or where learners struggle with Block 3 (the entry-level content of Bedrock's Tier 2 vocabulary).
  • Special school/hospital school usage, with access can set up across groups (rather than classes) in every subject, allowing for specialised teaching and/or niche subjects due to the nature of the curriculum.
  • Separate groups created for home learners/persistent absentees/short-term hospital stay students.
