How does Bedrock's learning algorithm work?

Algorithm: Assess > Teach > Reteach

The algorithm is the digital magic behind Bedrock. It powers each learner's personalised learning journey and drives the differentiated content that simply cannot be replicated manually for each learner by a teacher. It is foundational in our assess...teach...reteach principle and encourages long term memory retention.

Bedrock's learning algorithm also determines how a learner’s knowledge organiser is populated. The knowledge organiser can be found under the "My knowledge organiser" tab on the learner's dashboard. Teachers can view each learner’s knowledge organiser via their teacher dashboard. The algorithm determines where a word (or "knowledge item") sits in the knowledge organiser.

There are two important features of our algorithm:

  1. reteaching
  2. recapping (also referred to as memory-checking)

Reteaching and recapping are served to the learner in this order:

  • one reteach
  • one reteach
  • one recap

If there are no words to recap/reteach, it is skipped. For example, the learner could be served:

  • one reteach
  • no reteach
  • one recap

What is recapping?

Recapping is when Bedrock gives a learner content they have seen before and have gotten correct. Recapping activities are served in the same order they were served to the learner originally. Words and knowledge items from one month ago are recapped.

What is reteaching?

Bedrock's algorithm uses the pre-and post-test data to determine the journey of learning a word or Knowledge Item.
